Andrew Oliver (March 28, 1706 - March 3, 1774) was a Massachusetts politician. Oliver was the man commissioned to enforce the Stamp Act in Massachusetts. However, Oliver was forced to resign after repeated violence from the colonists in Boston - an effigy of him was hung up at the future Liberty Tree on August 14, 1765 by Boston's "The Loyal Nine" and that night his Boston house was destroyed by the mob. The Liberty Tree (1646–1775) was a famous elm tree that stood in the commons of Boston, Massachusetts Colony, in the days before the American Revolution. The tree was a rallying point for the growing resistance to the rule of England over the American colonies. In the years that followed, almost every American town had its own Liberty Tree—a living symbol of popular support for individual liberty and resistance to tyranny. |
