A Guide to SHW For New Members

About SHW

Stupid Home Work is the newest addition to the Z Internet Forum Empire. Here you can talk about anything that is on your mind. It could be school, the girl you are about to ask out, video games, what you had for breakfast, or how your school basketball game went.

Here at SHW (Stupid Home Work) you can receive advice on all aspects of social and academic life. If you are having trouble with Y=mx+b or essay writing there are people here to help. If you wish to gain advice about how to deal with stress, relationships etc. you will receive the advice in a matter of hours. Even minutes depending on how many people or signed on.

Warning: We are not experts, but we are however students like yourself. We go through the same problems you do, even though we may not give the BEST advice we really do care. Don't be afraid to post your problem. There is a chance that somebody else is or has been going through the same thing.

Your Forum Leaders

We currently have 3 moderators at SHW. They are,
Shmads AIM: Shmads
Nastad0n AIM: Nastad0n
NiceGuy. AIM: Hey its NiceGuy. NiceGuy is also an administrator on Halo3forum and a published writer.

Their names are displayed in ORANGE as an easy way to tell them apart from the regular members.

The job of the moderator is vital in order to keep a forum running smoothly. They include, editing and deleting spam, banning rule breakers, giving advice to members in need, and being overall cool people.

If you have a question about the forum as a whole or a problem you are having with another member these are the guys to go to first. They will be glad to help.

You also must listen to them. They know what they are doing, and they want everybody to have the best experience possible while at SHW.

Z

Z owns the site. He also owns the following sites.

Z runs, owns, and pays for this site. He is the big daddy. He knows what he is doing, and has some big plans for SHW coming soon.

As the administrator it is his job to keep the forum alive. He pays for the google adds, and the domain name as well. He is the boss. Whatever he says goes.

The Forum
SHW is divided into 7 Sections and they are

General Discussion: Here you can talk about school in general. The Help Section is also here. This sub forum is for help with the website itself.

Subjects: Every academic subject known to man is here.
Example: Post your Creative writing in the creative writing section under English, or your frustration with biology under the science section.

Placement Tests: Here you can discuss your ACT or SATs.

School Activities: Discuss sports and clubs here.

Social life: a huge part of going to high school is your social life, here you can post about your relationships or what you do on Friday nights.

Recess: This is the most popular of the 7. Here you can talk about anything that does not fit in the other 6. Movies, Music, Video games, your artwork, forum games, debate etc.

Principal's Office: This is the section just for the moderators and Z. You cannot view anything from this forum.

The Arcade

There is also a arcade attached to SHW. With it's own leader boards for SHW members.

If you reach the #1 spot on a game you get a message under your user name when you post telling everybody you are the best at (insert game).

Communication On SHW

There are 3 Primary ways of communication on SHW. The primary way of communication is posting.

Posting- To post in a topic you are interested in simply click the post button for a box in which you can type in your reply. Or you can hit "quick reply" this opens a smaller box at the bottom of the page in which to type in, however from here you cannot do all of the fancy fonts and colors. When you make a post please make sure it is on topic. Spamming is not allowed. Also hitting the QUOTE button under a post will also bring you to the posting page with that persons post already entered in the box.

PLEASE! When you are writing be sure to spell things correctly and use full sentences. Do NoT TyYp3 L!Ke DiZ!
Not Type Do Diz Like noT!

And please use some punctuation in your posts.

Threads- If you want to talk about something but don't see a thread to post about it in. Then you can make a new thread about the topic you wish to talk about. To make a new thread go to the forum that best fits the topic you wish to talk about and there will be a "new topic" button on the top left of the page. Create the name, post what you want to say, then enter. Now people can post in your thread about the topic you wish to discuss.

-If you are not sure if a thread on your subject has been posted before go to the search button on the top right of the page

Private Message (PM)- A private message is like a email service within the forum. To send a PM click the user name of the person you wish to send the message to. There will be an option to send a PM. To check your PMs simply click "Private Messages" on the top left of any page in the forum. Or go to your User CP

Note: Before posting you should read the rules of SHW as posted above.
Also, do not treat threads like AIM conversations. Do not make pointless posts that have nothing to do with the topic. If you follow the rules there will be no problems

Detention

Detention is pretty much, well detention. Detention is the SHW version of the ban. You can be placed in detention for breaking any of the rules stated in the sections above. When you are put into Detention the only thing you can do is look at the forum. NOTHING ELSE. The only thing you can do is look at it. Detentions can last from 1 day to forever depending on situation. If you are banned multiple times then you may be in Detention FOREVER! So, as long as you don't break any of the rules you will be fine

The Art of Flaming

Eventually, you and another member (or two) will get into a heavy argument against each other. It can get pretty intense, especially when both sides are not willing to give up room. When you go into this territory, you put yourself at risk of getting a ban, sometimes a long one. If you argue the right way, however, you are protected by the rules of SHW.

The number one thing you must know is that you can NEVER directly insult the person you are arguing with. This is considered flaming, and a mod will ban you. Directly insulting a member will never help your case, it will only create hate.

Lets say that you are in an argument about which montage is better. The way to push your point is to say why what you believe is true. For this example, you can do this by explaining that the montage had better gameplay, has better editing, etc. You keep pressing the reasons why you are right, and explaining why they are wrong. You NEVER insult the person itself, only their views.

The most important thing about arguments is not directly insulting someone, its the best advice I (or anyone for that matter) could possibly give you. I urge you to remember that.

Eventually, a mod will close a thread with a heavy argument going on in it. 99% of the time, neither member will stop posting, and the argument will drone on, giving each person a better chance of a ban. The mods are told to keep the thread open for a while for the members to have their argument. Eventually (be ready for this), a mod will have some sort of resolving post and close the thread. In other words, they get the last word. After this, its a good idea to just let it be. Don't go make another thread on the topic. Leave the argument out of SHW (like on AIM).

If you think it is getting out of hand, just stop posting. The only way to end an argument (without a mod) is to be the bigger man and stop posting. Simple as that. You must let the other member get the last word in the argument.

Arguments have no winners, the best case scenario is that both members understand the other's opinion, and respect it. You are barely ever going to convince someone to change opinions.

If you feel that you were cut off of a heavy argument on SHW, continue it on AIM, or even start it on AIM, so that you won't be banned on SHW. Just remember to be respectful, even though the rules of SHW aren't protecting you.

All in all, keep arguments on SHW clean, and you will have a better time. Is a one week ban really worth a one hour argument?

Signatures and Avatars

Signatures- "sigs" are the pictures or text below every person's post. For instance my signature is a picture of Charmander and some text. There are only 3 main rules about sigs.

-No porn
-No swearing/racist text
-Signatures cannot be HUGE. 1 or 2 pictures and some text is all you need.

To get a "sig" you can go to the Grafix forum and request one. Some of our members are excellent with Photoshop. Or you can search the internet for one. To put it under your name go to your User CP and there will be an option on the top left of the tool bar.

Use the formatting code [IMG] www.link to pic.com [/IMG] to add it to your profile.

Avatars- Avatars are the small pictures below each person's user name. The same rules apply to the avatar. To add an avatar to your profile got to your User CP. There will be an option at the bottom of the first tool bar on the left.
