1. 5x-8 +12. Add 8 to 12 giving you 20. So, 5x = 20. 20/5 = 4. x=4


If this is giving you trouble then you are gonna die in higher math.

i like how you're more interested in the answers than learning, especially when this is the easy math. its just solving for variables.. lets take a random question.

8u + 2 = 6
So you get the u by itself.
8u = 6-2
8u = 4
Get it down to just u by dividing both sides by 8.
u = 4/8
u = 1/2

Check it
8(1/2) + 2 = 6
4 + 2 = 6
6 = 6

Don't tell me that's too hard... if I was in that class, I'd have more trouble getting it in all that correct form than actually solving it ^.


I'll do another in case you don't get it... (note: I'm not putting it in that form that it's asking, just solving it)
C|5(<<Fraction) - 4 = -3
Which I'm thinking means C/5 - 4 = -3
Now to get C by itself, it's always easier to get rid of add/subtract before division/mult. because then you have to do it to less things (I'll do it both ways so you know what I'm talking about)
Easier way:
C/5 - 4 = -3
C/5 = -3 + 4
C/5 = 1
C = 5
"Harder" way:
C/5 - 4 = -3
Mult. everything by 5.
5(C/5) - 5(4) = 5(-3)
C - 20 = -15
C = -15 + 20
C = 5

Either way works though so you don't have to worry about memorizing which to do first. Try them yourself so you can pass your test instead of just your homework.

So you can "check" your answers after "doing" them:
1. 4
2. 3
3. 5
4. 3
5. 2
6. 11
7. 1/2
8. -9
9. 18
10. -12
11. 9
12. I interpret question as (-2/5)x + 4 = 8 so answer : -10

1. 262
2. I interpret it as : (-1/4)w - 1 =6 and so answer : -28

You divide both sides by 8. 8u/8 = u 4/8 simplified is 1/2.

were mine not detailed enough? what am i missing? just think.. a variable is an unknown number. so you solve the known numbers and that gives you the value of the variable. then to check it, you just substitute your answers for the variable.

Easy example:
3x + 5 = 10
3x = 10-5
3x = 5
3x/3 = 5/3
x = 5/3
Check.
3(5/3) + 5 = 10
5 + 5 = 10
10 = 10.
