| Calculus AB or Calculus BC :
06-19-2007
I'm taking Calculus next year as a Junior and I need some advice as to whether I should take Calculus AB or Calculus BC. I'm already taking AP Statistics and AP Chemistry. Please don't post if you don't know what you're talking about. |

If you take BC, will you be over worked?
If you think that you can handle it, take BC, it looks better on your college resume (Even though it already sounds like you have a good one ) and is more of a challenge, which I enjoy, and that is why I am taking BC.
I hear improper integrals are pretty hard. I want to try them

If you skip AB, you will not learn some concepts that will help you in BC. You will end up almost having to teach yourself basic integration rules.

If you take AP Stat, then you should be up to BC. And it looks better. Take it if you can, no point taking moar math in college. |

AP Statistics isn't hard at all, and I had a really great teacher. If you take AP Calculus AB all year you can still take the Calculus BC exam at the end of the year... the students here finished the Calculus AB curriculum with 3-4 weeks left of the school year and students who wanted to learn some of the Calculus BC material as a way to better prepare for the BC exam were able to. I dont know if your school will offer such an opportunity but it's nice to have, and just know that AB is the first 2/3rds of semester of college whereas BC is a whole semester's worth. I hope this helps. |

that's really good you're taking calculus as a junior. i actually just did the same thing last school year. i was the first person at my school to ever skip pre-calculus as well. so, as you can tell, i do very well with math. at my school they offered AP Calclulus AB. and in my honest opinion, i would not recommend BC. the class in itself was not too hard, but when it came to the AP test, it was killer. it was ridiculously hard. and it wasn't just me who thought that either. one girl in my class, who had a 100, and was taking FIVE other AP courses, thought it was very difficult too. the BC test can't be any easier...so that's why i'd recommend sticking with AB. the score on the test counts more than the score in the class. just something to think about. |

I was talking to some other kid and he said the AP Calc BC test wasn't that bad. But I don't know. |

i guess maybe it's just how well the teacher teaches. i thought i had an excellent teacher. . but the word problems on the AP test were ridiculous. just make sure you study "concept" questions A LOT. and definitely get good with function notation. college board loves that. lol. |
