Default Homework Help please- chem : 02-04-2008
i got to put oxidation numbers for these stupid compounds can someone tell me how to find oxidation numbers- please no links to some where else. here are some examples of compounds i need oxidation numbers for
[]= superscript(small number on top)
()= subscript(small number in bottom) idk no if im right with what those are called i just call them small numbers anyway.

1.N(2)
2.N[-3]
3.N(2)O(3)
4.KNO(3)
5.NH(4)NO(3)
6.K(2)Cr(2)O(7)
7.CO[-2](3)
8.NH[+1](4)

thanx if you can help me please select differnt situations like number 1,2,6,8

It looks like you have all of them right but number 8. I believe Ammonia is NH(3) not NH(4) like you have it. And I'm not 100% sure you are right on number 6 either, I couldn't figure that one out.

The rest look good though.

My bad, the way you formated the whole thing screwed me up, lol, sorry.

Oxidation number is basically the number of electrons a element/compound must gain or lose for it's outermost shell to become full, or make it stable.

And to be honest, I haven't done this stuff in a while, and I have no clue how to do it. Sorry.
