11-07-2008
Anybody know a good way to memorize polyatomic ions (the formula for them)?
Like how am I supposed to remembe that acetate is C2H3O2-?
Or that Chlorite is CLO2-? |

I have a valence table printed on the back of my periodic table, I keep em both in my bag so I can get em out whenever I need em. I know you said you want to memorize them, I'd say just keep using it and slowly you'll start to memorize them.

I hated this last year. I never really had any tricks to memorizing them. Just had to look at them and remember. |

Yea I've been using flashcards, but I feel like I'm "Brute forcing" them into my memory. I need some sort of stupid ways to think about the ions so i can memorize the formulas, and vice-versa. |

Whenever I try to explain it, it looks a mess. It's just basically memorization. I never though I'd get them, but after quizzing myself about 15 times, I could give you that permanganate is MnO4-, hypochlorite is ClO-, and ammonium is NH4+ and one of the only 7 or 8 positive polyatomic ion all within 5 seconds. I did do that all from memory, and yes, I am 2 1/2 years removed from the course.
I don't know, you seem like a fairly able kid and I know you know ways to memorize stuff. It's just a game of figuring out patters and then learning specific exceptions and applying them.

I was trying to find an easier way to memorize this shit.
Thanks though...I'm gonna be using my notecards I guess :*(
Edit: Took the quiz, aced it. Thanks everyone!
