Going into language arts honors for my freshman year..got this summer assignment and im having some trouble classifying the quotes into the following thematic topics...
· Individual versus Society
· Censorship
· Knowledge versus Ignorance
· Utopia (the perfect world)
· Isolation and/or alienation
bear in mind that some quotes might not even go into a topic and I picked em out wrongly..
“There are too many of us, he
thought. There are billions of us and
that’s too many. Nobody knows
anybody. Strangers come and
violate you. Strangers come and cut
your heart out. Strangers come and
take your blood.”
Individual versus society?
----------------------------
“’I wanted to talk to you.’ He paused.
‘You took all the pills in your bottle
last night.’ ‘Oh, I wouldn’t do that,’
she said, surprised. ‘The bottle was
empty.’ ‘I wouldn’t do a thing like
that. Why would I do a thing like
that?’ she said.”
?
----------------------------
’What a shame,’ she said. ‘You’re
not in love with anyone.’ ‘Yes I am!’
‘It doesn’t show.’ ‘I am, very much in
love!’ He tried to conjure up a face
to fit the words, but there was no
face. ‘I am!’”
?
-----------------------------
’It doesn’t think anything we don’t
want it to think.’ ‘That’s said,’ said
Montag, quietly, ‘because all we put
into it is hunting and finding and
killing. What a shame if that’s all it
can ever know.’”
Censorship?
------------------------------
’We must all be alike. Not everyone
born free and equal, as the
Constitution says, but everyone
made equal. Each man has the
image of every other; then we are
happy, for there are no mountains to
make them cower, to judge
themselves against.”
Utopia?
-------------------------------
“’Ask yourself, What do we want in
this country, above all? People want
to be happy, isn’t that right? Haven’t
you heard it all your life? I want to
be happy, people say. Well, aren’t
they? Don’t we keep them moving,
don’t we give them fun? That’s all
we live for, isn’t it? For pleasure, for
titillation? And you must admit our
culture provides plenty of these.’”
Utopia?
-------------------------------
“’You can’t build a house without
nails and wood. If you don’t want a
house build, hide the nails and
wood. If you don’t want a man
unhappy politically, don’t give him
two sides to a question to worry him;
give him one. Better yet, give him
none.’”
