This week we're going to be picking the courses that we want to take in senior year (12th grade). I'm going to be taking all the required courses and 3 electives. In senior year, Spanish is NOT required, so I'm very 50/50 on if I should continue with it or not. Spanish I think is my worst subject. I have to study a ridiculous amount and I'm still not doing as well as many of my other classes.
I'm an A- student for the most part but Spanish always brings my overall grade down most of the time. Last year I got a 69 on the final...I've never gotten such a low grade on any final exam. I would drop Spanish without question only some people are telling me that Colleges really like to see 4 years of Spanish.
So my question: Do colleges "frown upon" or dislike students not taking a 4th year of a foreign language in High School? If I dropped Spanish, I would take Public Speaking, which I would get college credit for.

At our school its mandatory to take 2 years of a language. Some colleges like to see that you stick with something for 3 or 4 years, but others don't. I guess it all depends on the college. |

I thought you only needed 2 years of Spanish?

Some colleges do see it as somewhat of a plus, even if you aren't very good at it. I have a B- (C on midterm) most of the year, and I'm in Spanish 5. The colleges I've submitted stuff to and gone to look at said that my transcript was very good, and they said that they like to see that I can "stick with something that isn't mandatory"
You need 3 years at some schools, and 2 at others. Calm down

IT looks better if you do because it shows initiative. I recommend taking it just because it looks better.
Just my 2 cents. |

If you're an A- student and have good SAT and/or ACT scores (and clubs or w/e which I don't) they wouldn't "frown upon" you unless it's for some major scholarship that only a really small group get (full scholarship for SMU only given out to 25 students). If you're in AP or advanced whatever take something like Computer Science 1 if they have it there... it's AP (so they wont frown) and an easy A (at least at my school - I knew nothing about programming when I entered so it starts from basics). |

At our school, we are taught that 2 is what most colleges want now a days, so yeah, you'd definately be fine.

3 is the magic number. If you take 3 years you do not have to take a language class at most colleges. Sure it may look good. But your over all gpa is more important.

Taking AP classes and Honors classes as well as showing motivation to take on challenging courses is a must. 3 years is decent but won't cut it for most colleges to look at it and think you are better than other applicants. 4 years of a language is awesome, plus, the AP credit vocers the language class in college. 3 years for the most part doesn't pass. |
