| I have problems with more than 1 variable. :
11-06-2007
The problem is and 3y-20+4y+4=180. In my textbook the answer is 28=y, but i keep getting 22.5...It is a parallelogram with two diagonals that bisect into 2 pairs of congruent segments.

I'm going to assume you mean 3y-20+4y+4=180 and that those are consecutive interior angles.
I'll walk through this...
Since you want to combine like terms, you will have 7y-16=180 You will add 16 to both sides to get the variable by itself, ending up with 7y=196 Divide both sides by 7, and you get y=28.
Hope I helped.

Hope I helped. | Thanks. I guess I was supposed to add the variables first right?
I have another problem which i don't understand. 4x-2+3y-1=180. I don't know what to do with the variables.

Well, what you need to do for that is set up two equations and get either the x's or the y's to cancel out. I can't do it now, but I might later. Sorry. You might be better off asking your teacher tomorrow; I'm kind of busy today.

STILL WORKING...edit again still working...dammit. its been too long. i think i solved it but its such a messed up way im not gonna try to explain, ok im tryin again not finishing this will bug me.
4x-2+3y-1=180
combine like terms
4x+3y=183
divide each side by 4
x+3y=45.75
divide each side by 3
x+y=15.25
move x to one side
y=15.25-x
input this where ever y is in the original problem
4x-2+3(15.25-x)-1=180
solve
4x+47.75-3x=183
combine like terms
x+47.75=183
add -47.75 to both sides
x=135.25
ok there is x ill make new post for y

By the way, the first problem only has one variable. |

back to problem
starting at x+y=15.25
do the opposite of last time and move y to one side
x=15.25-y
use that in place of x in original problem
4(15.25-y)-2+3y-1=180
solve
61-4y+3y=183
61-y=183
add-61 to both sides
-y=122
multiply each side by -1
y=-122
check work
plug in values for each variable to original problem
4(135.25)-2+3(-122)-1=180
solve
541-2-366-1=180
i did something wrong fixing. will edit posts
im sorry i have chores to do i will finish this later. i can't find where i messed up, this is the proper mehtod. if u check to work ull find where i went wrong,
