1. Which sentences in the second paragraph of part 1 explain the lack of enthusiasm with which the soldiers were met at the train station? Do the men express any disappointment at this lack of a welcoming reception? What do you think sustains the men as they complete the journey home?

3. In part 2, the point of view alternates between that of Private Smith and that of his wife and children. Why do you think Garland chose to alternate his point of view in the scene? What are some realistic details that make each point of view poignant?
